Now that my hospital long-stay (stem cell transplant) is drawing to a close, I wanted to share some insights into enhancing the duration.  Granted we often don’t have the luxury of knowing that we are even going into the hospital, but once a “sleepover” has been established, I would act upon the following ASAP.

Toilet paper.  All obvious reasons aside, institootional TP isn’t tooshy friendly.  That aside, your own 2-ply (or more if you so desire) is great for blowing noses, drying tears (of joy or sorrow), and other similar applications where a soft touch will be appreciated.

Jammies.  I was in the most sterile environment attainable, and they still let me wear my own PJs.  There is nothing more comforting while still being hospital apropos.  A shirt (mandatory: that buttons up the front for any procedural needs) and a pair of my favorite sport shorts (Twins, Vikes, Wild, Wolves rotation, duh!) made a world of difference to my attitude and comfort.

Slippers.  I can’t begin to describe the slip-proof, polyester, one-size-fits-all, dual-sided haute couture that the hospital provided.  And here’s a little inside scoop: the yellow ones mean you are a risk to fall, which is very serious business in hospitals.  But I digress - bring your own slippers, too. Your feet will thank you.

With all of the greatest intentions and inventions known to modern medicine, no one wants you out of the hospital more than the hospital people themselves.  So if these things (or any others that you can think of) make you more comfortable / happy, and ergo heal faster, they won’t have any issues with you bringing a little home with you.  May your stay be swift and successful.
