No doubt you've seen those pithy pillows that propose philosophical perspectives and platitudes, or ponder life's most puzzling problems. As trite as it is to point out, with things like PERVASIVE social media, a 25-hour news cycle, and a pace of life in America that seems to move ever faster and faster (we're essentially falling forward in order just to keep up) - the complexity of our lives is overwhelming. Life is quite convoluted, and at times can be a bit of a shit sandwich. But maybe that’s the point, what if we decided to take it one bite at a time?
My pillow-sophy is: One worry at a time. Preferably the one in the present, as we can't undo the past (though we can try to learn from it), and we can’t affect the uncontrollable aspects of the future (in most respects), nor can we change the future by worrying about it before it even happens. But to live in the moment - literally and figuratively: gives us a much more manageable quantity of life to deal with, allows us to be more attentive and thoughtful about that one thing / that one need, and increases our likelihood for success in managing that moment since it is getting so much of our concerted focus.
Somewhere between the simplistic prose of a throw pillow and the crushing complexity of life's daily barrage, lies an approach to tackle our daily trials and tribulations in a way that approaches it one layer at a time. True, they all fit together like an elaborate labyrinth, but that doesn't mean that we need to take it apart from all sides at once, rather peel the onion one layer at a time. I suspect it won't be as stinky and is less likely to make us cry. As the pillow says: Give Please A Chance.
