I apologize that this is a week late, but it's never too late to recognize those brave men and women (and canine) who selflessly serve/d our country. Actually, it's an acknowledgment that should be remembered every day that we breathe "free" air.
Some we can only thank in our thoughts and prayers. Others we can thank in person. In all situations, when reflecting on a Memorial Day (or any day), the thing that I notice most poignantly is: their humility about the sacrifice and their gratitude for the appreciation of a grateful nation. What sometimes gets overlooked, beyond the physical and emotional scars of conflict, is the burden of cancer that many also carried home with themselves from the battlefield.
I have had the privilege to meet and get to know a veteran Marine survivor of multiple "tours of duty." Camp Lejeune (leukemia), Vietnam (Agent Orange), a stint in the New York Police Department (New York's finest), and primarily a career with the New York City Fire Department (New York's bravest). Some of which contributed to his current cancer diagnoses, all of which demonstrate his life of magnanimous servitude and lifelong positive attitude. He inspires me !
A lifetime career, or even just a stint, in service of our country brings with it certain noble virtues - that deserve recognition. A life, or even just a stint, in pursuit of one's own well-being can also be a battle whose "soldiers" (patients) and "assistance personnel" (caregivers) warrant appreciation. Thank you . . .
